Shingirai Chiweshe’s Perfect Form Lights Up Heroes Day Chess Tourney
SHINGIRAI Chiweshe won the Heroes Day Chess rapid tournament that concluded on Tuesday at Harare Club in Harare, going undefeated over two days of rapid-fire play against Zimbabwe’s top players.
Chiweshe scored 6.5 points out of seven, clinching the title after defeating former national champion Emarald Mushore and holding off veteran Spencer Masango in a critical late-round draw.
From the start, Chiweshe played strongly making it hard for his opponents to beat him and his win against strong opponents in the early rounds proved he was in charge. However, in the next-to-last round, the experienced Masango fought back and drew the game.
Masango, the battle-hardened veteran, finished with six points, the same as Farai Hamandishe. But when the scores were tied, the Buchholz tiebreak system tipped second place in Masango’s favour.
The fight for third place featured national team player Vitalis Mapuranga, Michael Ngwerume, and Blessing Mbabvu, all tied at 5.5 points.
Each player showed great skill during the event, but none could catch the leader who was far ahead.
In the ladies’ division, national champion Christine Makwena and Tatenda Zengeni shared top honours with 5.5 points. Sally Marairwa claimed third place.
The development section was a battle of the young guns. John Chibvuri Jr. topped the field with 5.5 points, while Emmanuel Mhiti and Tawananyasha Chimbodza shared second with five points apiece.
The event, organized by Zim Chess Consultancy and sponsored by TopaTrust Consulting, drew more than a hundred competitors from across the country to mark the Heroes Day national holiday with some action on the chessboard.
