Zim Government celebrates successful hosting of Regional table tennis champs

THE successful staging of the Southern Africa Regional Table Tennis Championships in Zimbabwe has been hailed as an important milestone for regional sporting cooperation, with government and sports leaders saying the event will leave a lasting legacy beyond the competition itself.
The championships, which concluded on Sunday after three days of action at Glen City in Harare, brought together leading players from South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and hosts Zimbabwe.
Speaking through a speech delivered on his behalf, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland East, Itayi Ndudzo, said the Government of Zimbabwe remains committed to using sport as a catalyst for national and regional development.
“The Government of Zimbabwe recognises sport as an important vehicle for national development,” said Ndudzo.
He noted that hosting regional competitions creates opportunities that extend well beyond the sporting arena.
“Events such as these also stimulate tourism, create business opportunities and strengthen regional cooperation,” he said.
Ndudzo said the true value of the championships would be reflected not only in the medals won but also in the relationships built among athletes and officials.
“The success of these championships will not only be measured by the medals won, but also by the friendships created, the experiences shared and the inspiration that our young athletes take back to their respective nations,” he said.
AUSC Region 5 president Kudzanani Motswagale encouraged competitors to view the regional championships as a stepping stone to bigger international competitions.
“Many of you will go on to represent your countries at continental championships, the African Games, the Commonwealth Games, World Championships and the Olympic Games,” he said.
He also reminded athletes that success in sport is measured by more than victories.
“Winning is important, but integrity, humility and respect are the qualities that define true champions.”
Sports and Recreation Commission director general Allen Mavunga, in remarks delivered by SRC official Adelaide Gumbo, congratulated all participating teams for contributing to a successful tournament.
“Whether you leave with a medal or not, you have represented your country with pride and have contributed to the success of this regional event,” Mavunga said.
He said regional competitions remain an important part of athlete development, providing valuable experience ahead of continental and global competitions.
“Regional competitions such as these are essential in preparing our athletes for higher levels of competition, including the African Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championships and the Olympic Games.”
