Zim Ninja Returns Home After Winning 5 Gold Medals in England

Shihan Wilfred Mashaya, one of Zimbabwe’s top martial artists, arrived back in Harare on Friday morning after winning five gold medals at the IMAC English Open Tournament in York, England.
Mashaya, also known as the “Zim Ninja,” landed at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport proudly holding his five gold medals and the “Athlete of the Tournament” award.
His mother and all five of his sisters were there to welcome him home. Despite his flight arriving at an unusual hour, a large group of people gathered at the airport to celebrate his return. Among them were close friends, fellow martial artists, members of the Zim Ninja Academy, the Zimbabwe Karate Union, and officers from the police force.
The welcome was led by Chief Superintendent Chiteka Raymond from the ZRP Mkushi Academy, alongside Superintendent Mawone Paul and other police officers.
Mashaya said he was happy to be home after such a successful trip.
“It feels great to be back. Winning five gold medals is a dream come true. More importantly, it shows the world what Zimbabwean athletes are capable of,” he said.
He also thanked the Zimbabwean community in the UK for their support during the competition. He especially appreciated fellow countryman William Mahlunge, also known as Muparendi Wigo, who drove him to the airport for his flight home.
“Their support made a big difference. I could feel the pride and unity every time I competed,” Mashaya added.
At the tournament, he competed in five categories involving traditional Japanese and Okinawan weapons. He used the sword, nunchaku, sai, tonfa, and kama to win in Traditional, Freestyle, Creative, and Musical & Advanced weapon divisions. His flawless performance impressed the judges and confirmed his status as one of Africa’s best martial artists.
Mashaya is now focused on preparing for the World Championships in Wales this October. He hopes to lead a Zimbabwean team of more than 15 athletes—including both kids and adults—but said financial support will be key.
“We have the talent and determination. Now we need partners who believe in our mission,” he said.
Mashaya is a sixth-degree black belt and former Zimbabwe Sports Person of the Year. He has won international medals in countries like Russia, Spain, Italy, and Poland, and made history as the first African to become a Kobudo World Champion.
