FM Zhemba Clinches Harare Open Blitz Title

FIDE Master Jemusse Zhemba delivered a commanding performance to win the Harare Open Blitz chess tournament, held on Sunday at the Harare Club Hotel.

Zhemba finished top of the standings after 11 rounds with an impressive 10 points.

Rated 2206, Zhemba was in fine form throughout the fast-paced blitz event, dropping only a single point as he outplayed a strong field. His consistency and sharp tactical play saw him finish a clear winner.

Cyril Chigodo produced one of the standout performances of the tournament to claim second place with 9 points. Despite coming in with a lower rating, Chigodo held his own against higher-rated opponents and remained in title contention until the final rounds.

Third place went to Tanaka Katsande on 8 points, edging Candidate Master Dion Moyo on tie-breaks. Moyo, the highest-rated player in the field at 2207, also finished on 8 points but settled for fourth position.

Blessing Moyo placed fifth with 6.5 points, followed by FIDE Master Roy Mwadzura in sixth on the same score. Spencer Masango completed the top seven with 6.5 points and also walked away with the Best Over-40 prize.

The women’s category attracted positive attention, with Linda Shaba winning the Best Lady award. Tatenda Ndou finished second-best lady, while Jemimah Masarira claimed third place. The Ladies’ first prize cash of US$50 was sponsored by UK-based Glowish.

The tournament received support from several sponsors, including Dr Patrick Mhaka, Mr Admire Mawire, Pure Joy Weave Centre and Ms Loice Chatizah.

In addition to sponsorship support, Ms Chatizah also presented the female players with goodie bags and hampers as part of efforts to encourage greater participation of women in chess.

Speaking after the prize-giving ceremony, Ms Chatizah said: “This was a well-organised tournament and I was happy to see women and girls competing with men at this event. I will be attending more chess tournaments in future.”

The event was organised by Zim Chess Consultancy.
