MHONDORO Chess Club is steadily building a name across Zimbabwe through consistent excellence.
From schools to tertiary institutions, from local tournaments to national platforms, Mhondoro players are showing discipline, talent, and a hunger to win.
Leading the charge is Tatenda Ndou, who delivered a powerful performance to win the prestigious Easter Open Ladies Section.
At the tertiary level, Mhondoro’s strength was on full display at the 2026 TERSA Games. Leonard Mazonde, a student at Mutare Polytechnic, rose above the competition to claim gold, exhibiting maturity beyond his years. Close behind him was fellow Mhondoro player Crispen Sangwano of Kwekwe Polytechnic, who secured silver, confirming the club’s depth in talent.
Consistency has also been a defining feature. Ropafadzo Mandizha, currently studying at the Bindura University, produced one of the most impressive performances of the season by scoring 12 wins out of 13 games at the 2026 ZUS Games.
At the 2026 ZITCOSA Games, Mhondoro’s influence extended beyond individual brilliance to team success. Nyarai Muponda, a student at Madziwa Teachers’ College, was flawless across 13 rounds, finishing with a perfect score. Her performance propelled the Madziwa team to the top of the ladies’ team event.
The club’s presence is also being felt at the grassroots level. At the NASH Chess Event, Asher Penyani fought with determination to secure a bronze medal, a promising sign for the future.
What makes these achievements remarkable is the spread, different cities, different institutions, one identity.
Mhondoro Chess is becoming a pipeline of excellence and one thing is becoming clear, wherever there is a tournament, there is a strong chance a Mhondoro player will be in contention.
