Zimbabwe show character despite Bangladesh defeat at U19 World Cup

ZIMBABWE Under-19s showed heart and determination against Bangladesh in their Super 6 ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup match at Harare Sports Club on Saturday, with captain Simbarashe Mudzengerere leading from the front.

Officially sponsored by Mukuru, the young Chevrons eventually lost by 74 runs, but the performance had plenty of encouraging moments, especially with the ball and during a stubborn lower-order fightback.

Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bat, but Zimbabwe’s bowlers kept things tight for most of the innings. Panashe Mazai made the early breakthrough by removing Rifat Beg for 15, and sharp fielding brought another wicket when Zawad Abrar was run out for 25.

The bowlers worked well together through the middle overs. Tatenda Chimugoro picked up 2 for 49, Shelton Mazvitorera took 2 for 44, and Michael Blignaut finished with 2 for 41, as Zimbabwe regularly broke partnerships. Bangladesh captain Azizul Hakim top-scored with 59, while Rizan Hossan added 47, but Zimbabwe closed the innings strongly to restrict them to 253 for 9 from 50 overs.

Chasing 254, Zimbabwe ran into trouble early as Bangladesh seamer Iqbal Hossain Emon found his rhythm with the new ball. He knocked over the top order and put the hosts under pressure inside the first 15 overs.

In the middle of the collapse, Mudzengerere stood firm. The skipper showed patience and composure, batting deep into the innings for a hard-earned 70 off 121 balls, which included eight boundaries. He held the innings together and refused to give his wicket away.

With Zimbabwe struggling at 109 for 8, Mudzengerere found a fighting partner in Shelton Mazvitorera. The pair added a valuable 64 runs for the ninth wicket, forcing Bangladesh to work hard for every breakthrough.

Mazvitorera played with freedom, finishing unbeaten on 42 from 42 balls, striking four fours and two sixes, while Mudzengerere was eventually dismissed in the 46th over.

Zimbabwe were bowled out for 179 in 48.4 overs, but the late resistance and disciplined bowling effort showed the team’s character and fighting spirit.
