Kukudzarema outwits Masango to seize Minerva Chess Open lead after six rounds

SHEPHERED Kukudzarema produced a clever endgame performance to defeat veteran Spencer Masango and move into sole possession of first place after six rounds at the Minerva Zim Open Chess Tournament in Harare on Friday.

Playing with the black pieces on the top board in the sixth round, Kukudzarema, a student at Mutare Polytechnic rated 2162, overcame fourth seed Masango in a double edged endgame battle that was eventually decided by a subtle sacrifice trick.

With the position finely balanced, Kukudzarema lured Masango’s king into capturing a bishop on a2. The move appeared to offer material, but it had a crucial positional consequence as the white king became tied down, blocking the advance of Black’s pawn on a3.

Kukudzarema then exploited the situation by creating an unstoppable passed h-pawn, leaving Masango with no effective defence as the game slipped away.

The victory took Kukudzarema to 5.5 points from six games and put him at the top of the standings, half a point clear of his nearest challengers.

The fifth seed has been one of the outstanding performers of the tournament, remaining unbeaten through six rounds with five victories and one draw.

His campaign began with a win over Mozambique’s CM Persson Abrantes, before he drew with Terrence Mureya in the second round. He then defeated Emarald Mushore, Zambia’s Tebby Swatu, Zambia’s CM Siame Kela Kaulule and Masango in successive rounds.

Kukudzarema’s performance has been particularly impressive given his ELO rating. His current tournament performance rating stands at 2488 so far, reflecting the strength of his results against a competitive field.

The 2026 season has already been a breakthrough year for the Mutare Polytechnic student.

Kukudzarema won the men’s chess gold medal at the Confederation of University and Colleges Sports Associations (CUCSA) Games in Gaborone, Botswana, in July, completing the competition unbeaten.

He has also captured gold at both the Technical Education Sports, Arts and Recreation (TESAR) championships and the Zimbabwe Tertiary Sports (ZiTS) championships.

Kukudzarema now faces another major test in the seventh round this morning when he meets fellow Zimbabwean Tapiwa Jele on the top board.

Jele is second on five points after defeating Zambia’s Justine Daka in the sixth round.

Zambia’s International Master Gillan Bwalya is also on five points and will face Masango, who remains fourth on 4.5 points.
