Book Launch Adds New Chapter to Great Dyke Tour

AFTER a gruelling day’s ride from Selous to Kwekwe, participants in the 2026 Nedbank Tour de Great Dyke swapped cycling gear for an evening of literature and reflection as Minex chairperson Munyaradzi Hwengwere launched his latest book, The Great Dyke: Beyond the Rock, at King Solomon’s Hotel on Thursday night.

The publication explores the geology, history, economic significance and investment potential of the Great Dyke, the mineral-rich corridor that forms the backdrop to the annual cycling tour. Addressing guests at the launch, Hwengwere said the value of the Great Dyke extended far beyond the minerals beneath its surface.

“The rock is a gift of nature,” he said, adding that the true measure of success lay in how people utilised the resources and opportunities they had been given.

Representing the Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe, Pardon Chitsuro described the book as an important contribution to the country’s historical and mining records. He said the publication helped preserve knowledge about one of Zimbabwe’s most significant geological formations.

“One of the most valuable contributions of this publication is its role in preserving knowledge about the Great Dyke,” Chitsuro said.

Gifted Children Foundation director Emily Hwengwere commended the dedication that went into producing the book. She described the author as a lifelong communicator whose extensive professional experience had enriched the publication’s content.

Nedbank’s Farai Sithole congratulated Hwengwere on the achievement and highlighted the bank’s commitment to supporting the Tour de Great Dyke. He noted that the event serves not only as a sporting challenge but also as a fundraising platform for the Gifted Children Foundation’s school-fees programme, which assists vulnerable children.

Copies of The Great Dyke: Beyond the Rock are selling for US$20 each.

Meanwhile, the cycling tour enters its final stage today, with riders travelling from the Valterra Mine turn-off to Zvishavane, bringing another edition of the endurance event to a close.
