Zimbabwe A stars get World Cup audition against Ireland Wolves

ZIMBABWE’S fringe players have seven matches to make a statement.

The Zimbabwe A series against Ireland Wolves, which starts at Harare Sports Club on Thursday, gives selectors another look at players pushing for senior honours as preparations gather pace for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cupv, which Zimbabwe will co-host with South Africa and Namibia.

For several players in the home squad, this is less about development and more about making themselves impossible to ignore.

Experienced internationals Roy Kaia, Takudzwanashe Kaitano, Clive Madande, Johnathan Campbell and Dion Myers headline a 15-man squad that combines familiar names with younger players still working their way towards the highest level.

All five have already had a taste of international cricket but remain outside Zimbabwe’s settled first-choice side. A productive month against quality opposition could bring them back into contention as the national team looks to broaden its options ahead of a home World Cup.

The squad also includes former Zimbabwe Under-19 players Shelton Mazvitorera and Panashe Taruvinga, alongside Matthew Campbell, Michael Frost, Takudzwa Chataira, Victor Chirwa, Trevor Gwandu, Tanunurwa Makoni, Tinotenda Maposa and Kudzai Maunze. While the more experienced players will be looking to remind selectors of their value, the younger names have a chance to show they belong in the conversation.

Ireland’s visit carries similar importance.

The Wolves will be led by left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys and arrive with a squad that blends emerging talent and senior experience. Mark Adair, Gavin Hoey and Liam McCarthy are among the better-known names, while nine players who recently featured in Ireland’s ODI series in Namibia have also been included for the Zimbabwe tour.

Adair’s presence, particularly in the four-day matches, gives Ireland’s younger seam bowlers an experienced figure to learn from both on and off the field.

The tour is also part of a broader effort by Cricket Ireland to expose its players to conditions they could encounter during the 2027 World Cup cycle. With Zimbabwe set to host World Cup and qualifying matches, the visitors will use the trip to gain valuable experience of local surfaces and southern African conditions.

The red-ball portion of the series will be played entirely at Harare Sports Club. The opening match runs from 5 to 8 November, while the second is scheduled for 12 to 15 November. Play begins at 1000 hours on each day.

Attention then shifts to the 50-over format. Old Hararians Sports Club will host the first three matches on 18, 20 and 22 November before the series returns to Harare Sports Club for the final two fixtures on 25 and 27 November. All five matches start at 0930 hours.

For Zimbabwe A, the numbers on the scorecard will matter, but so will the impressions left behind.

With competition for places likely to intensify over the coming months, these matches offer players an opportunity to show they can handle greater responsibility and a bigger stage. For some, a strong series could reopen the door to international cricket. For others, it could be the first step towards it.

Zimbabwe A squad for the four-day matches: Johnathan Campbell, Matthew Campbell, Takudzwa Chataira, Victor Chirwa, Michael Frost, Trevor Gwandu, Roy Kaia, Takudzwanashe Kaitano, Clive Madande, Tanunurwa Makoni, Tinotenda Maposa, Kudzai Maunze, Shelton Mazvitorera, Dion Myers and Panashe Taruvinga.
