Late collapse leaves Zim A 163 behind as Humphreys takes three

HARARE – Zimbabwe A suffered a costly late collapse on Friday, losing their final five wickets for just 25 runs to be bowled out for 261 in reply to Ireland A’s 424 on the second day of their first-class match at Harare Sports Club.

Having recovered from an early wobble, the hosts appeared well placed at 236 for five in the 71st over. Takudzwanashe Kaitano and Clive Madande had combined for a valuable 70-run sixth-wicket partnership that gave Zimbabwe A hope of cutting significantly into Ireland A’s first-innings advantage.

Ireland A captain Matthew Humphreys sparked the collapse when he dismissed Madande for 45, caught by Jake Egan. Liam McCarthy then trapped Michael Frost lbw for two before Humphreys struck again, removing Tinotenda Maposa for four with Cade Carmichael taking the catch.

The pressure continued to mount as Shelton Mazvitorera was run out by Carmichael and wicketkeeper Ben Calitz without adding to the score. In the final over of the innings, Gavin Hoey wrapped up the tail when Trevor Gwandu was caught by Stephen Doheny for a duck.

The collapse left Kaitano stranded on an unbeaten 108, a determined innings that stood out amid Zimbabwe A’s struggles. His century was the backbone of the hosts’ reply after they had slipped to 8 for 2 in the opening exchanges.

Earlier, debutant Byron McDonough made an immediate impact for Ireland A by dismissing Tanunurwa Makoni for four in the second over. One over later, Mark Adair trapped Matthew Campbell lbw for four, leaving Zimbabwe A in early trouble.

Humphreys finished as Ireland A’s most successful bowler with figures of three for 60 from 21 overs. McDonough claimed two for 47 on his first-class debut, while Hoey took two for 62. Adair returned one for 44 from 16 overs, including four maiden overs.

Zimbabwe A scored their 261 runs at a rate of 3.26 per over but remain 163 runs behind heading into day three.
