Castle Tankard roars back for 66th edition

Zimbabwe’s premier Grade One race day returns to Borrowdale with US$50,000 stakes and Alick Macheso headlining

THE Castle Tankard gallops back into the spotlight on Saturday, May 9, as Castle Lager and the Mashonaland Turf Club stage the 66th running of Zimbabwe’s most celebrated horse race at Borrowdale Racecourse.

Free to the public, the event blends elite regional racing with a full music line-up, putting fans at the heart of a day built around Castle Lager. Gates open 11:00 and run through 19:30.

Billed as the country’s only Grade One horse-racing extravaganza, the Tankard brings together top horses, jockeys and trainers chasing a US$50,000 purse. As the official statement put it:

“The prestige and passion draw elite horses, skilled jockeys and dedicated trainers from across the region to compete for a US$50,000 stake, with anticipation already building as leading contenders prepare to chase one of the season’s most coveted trophies.”

Beyond the track, the entertainment is stacked. Sungura icon Alick Macheso leads the stage, joined by rising names Nisha Ts, Ndunge Yut, and more to keep the crowd moving between races.

Castle Lager frames the day as a full brand experience:

“This is more than just a race—it’s an iconic Castle Lager experience. We invite you to Live It. Feel It. Share It. with us, as it all comes together with a Castle.”

“Castle Lager is excited to host the legendary Castle Tankard Horse Racing event, now charging into its 66th edition.”

“In partnership with the Mashonaland Turf Club, this free, iconic event brings together the best of Zimbabwean and regional horse racing, alongside local music acts—with Castle Lager at the centre of the experience.”
