ZIMBABWE chess star Tapiwa Jele has added another significant milestone to his career after earning the Candidate Master (CM) title following a demanding campaign at the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
The 28-year-old former national champion carried a 2204 rating into the Olympiad and was deployed predominantly on board two for Zimbabwe’s Open team, which was captained by CM Kudakwashe Sibanda. Official tournament records show Jele scored 4.5 points from 10 games, comprising two victories, five draws and three defeats.
His route through the 11-round competition was anything but comfortable, with Jele repeatedly thrust against titled opposition.
He faced Ukrainian Grandmaster Anton Korobov, rated 2610, in the opening round before later holding Scotland’s International Master Andrew Greet, rated 2416, to a draw.
Jele followed that result by beating Kuwait Candidate Master Abdulrahman Al Ibrahim and then drew with South African FIDE Master Banele Mhango, rated 2354.
Another draw followed against Bahrain’s FIDE Master Husain Ayyad before Jele shared the point with Lesotho Candidate Master Lebajoa Tsephe and Panama FIDE Master Alexei Tapia Ostolaza.
One of his important victories came in round 10 when Zimbabwe swept Suriname 4-0. Jele defeated FIDE Master Viresh Giasi on the top board, while Emarald Mushore, Vitalis Mapuranga and Terrence Mureya completed the clean sweep.
Jele’s campaign ended with defeat to Lebanon Candidate Master Joe Assaad in the final round as Zimbabwe went down 3.5-0.5.
Despite that closing setback, the Olympiad marked another important chapter in Jele’s international career.
His 10 opponents included a Grandmaster, an International Master, four FIDE Masters and three Candidate Masters, illustrating the strength of opposition he encountered in Samarkand. He finished with a tournament performance rating of 2137.
The title also adds recognition to a player who has been among Zimbabwe’s leading competitors for several years.
Jele’s milestone adds to an encouraging Olympiad for Zimbabwean individual players, with Emarald Takudzwa Mushore also producing a strong tournament on the Open team.
Mushore accumulated six points from 10 appearances with a 2184 performance rating, including a notable victory over Kosovo FIDE Master Endrit Uruci.
