Zimbabwe chess team finished last at the recently concluded FIDE Online Olympiad.

The team captained by Elisha Thabo competed against the other nine countries in Division 2, Pool C from 2 – 4 September.

The online tournament format was born as a result of the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.

Top-seeded Spencer Masango was on board one and had one point in five games. Woman Candidate Masters Kudzanayi Charinda and Rumbidzayi Mawire were the team’s best performers, scoring 2.5 points out of the six games.

Team Zimbabwe played nine games, winning two of them by a 3.5 – 2.5 against Scotland. The team also won with the same score against Albania, and it was at this point, Masango’s performance was crucial, as it led to the team’s victory.

Eventually team Zimbabwe finished on the bottom of the table.
