Simbarashe Nyagona Wins TelOne Autum Tournament

SIMBARASHE Nyagona delivered a flawless performance to claim top honours in the Section X Classical category at the TelOne Autumn Chess Tournament, organised by Mhondoro Chess which concluded on Saturday.

Nyagona, rated 1789, was in a class of his own, sweeping all six rounds to finish with a perfect 6 points.

The battle for second place was far tighter, with Nigel Marowa and Bee Mbabvu both finishing on 5 points. Marowa edged into second position on tiebreaks, while Mbabvu settled for third after a strong and consistent campaign.

In the Under-14 section, Shantel Ihude of Mhondoro Chess emerged as the standout performer, clinching the title with an impressive 6 points from 7 rounds. Ihude’s also earned the Best Lady prize in the category, marking a memorable double triumph.

She was closely followed by Patience Magorosi, who scored 5.5 points, while a competitive chasing pack, including Anesu Ndondovedzai and Shanessa Ihude, finished on 5 points, highlighting the depth of talent in the junior ranks.

The Under-10 section also produced exciting battles, with Tanaka Pasura taking first place after a solid showing across seven rounds. Brandon Stanford impressed with 5.5 points to claim second, while Lisa Chiteweri completed the podium in third place.

Meanwhile, in the senior Section X category, the Best Lady accolade was awarded to Hope Mabasa, recognising her strong performance against a tough field.
