ZIMBABWE Karate Union (ZKU) secretary-general Tanaka Nyakuipa has been appointed World Ambassador for Zimbabwe by the United Countries Sports Management Council (UCSMC), adding an international responsibility to her growing portfolio in sports administration and youth development.
The appointment places Nyakuipa in the UCSMC Global Ambassador Network, where she is expected to promote sports management and education, international collaboration, youth leadership and development while helping connect Zimbabwean sports professionals and institutions with international networks.
The appointment represents another step in a journey that has seen Nyakuipa combine a professional background in accounting and business with an expanding role in sports administration.
She holds a BSc (Hons) in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University as well as Diploma and Advanced Diploma qualifications in Accounting and Business under the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
She has also pursued specialised sports education through the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee, including Sport Management and Advanced Sport Management courses.
Her sports training has covered administration, coaching, sport psychology, event management, safeguarding, athlete welfare, career transition, financial fitness, branding and prevention of competition manipulation.
The combination has enabled Nyakuipa to bring financial management and governance expertise into sport at a time when local associations are increasingly being challenged to professionalise their operations.
Nyakuipa served as ZKU treasurer from March 2023 until April this year before being elevated to secretary-general.
In her current role, she works alongside leading martial arts figures including Shidoshi Wilfred “Zim Ninja” Mashaya and Shihan Tawanda Mufundisi in the administration and development of karate in Zimbabwe.
Her administrative experience extends beyond karate.
She served as chief executive officer of the Zimbabwe Traditional Sports and Games Federation between February 2025 and April this year and has been a Prevention of Competition Manipulation Ambassador since October 2025, promoting integrity and fair competition in sport.
Nyakuipa has also worked with the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee as a Young Olympic Ambassador, with her growing interest in sports leadership taking her to several international platforms.
In 2025, she represented Zimbabwe at the African Women Martial Arts Leaders Programme in Uganda, where women’s participation and leadership in martial arts featured prominently.
She followed that up this year by representing the country at the 66th International Session for Young Olympic Ambassadors in Greece, which brought together emerging sports leaders from different countries to discuss Olympic values, inclusion, leadership and the future of sport.
Nyakuipa has also participated in an International Society of Olympic Historians initiative under the theme, “The First Olympians of My Country: The Road to the Games”.
Away from the boardroom, Nyakuipa is also an active martial artist who practises Kyokushin karate, where she holds a green belt, and also trains in kickboxing.
That experience has shaped her interest in using sport beyond competition, particularly as a vehicle for discipline, confidence, resilience and leadership among young people.
She has placed particular emphasis on creating opportunities for girls and young women in sport and wants to see more women progressing from participation into administration and leadership.
Her new UCSMC assignment is expected to give her an additional platform to pursue that agenda while building relationships between Zimbabwe and international sports organisations.
Nyakuipa views the appointment as an opportunity to connect, learn and create opportunities rather than simply adding another title to her résumé.
Her broader vision is to see sport become more accessible at community level while creating pathways through which young athletes can acquire life skills, education and leadership opportunities.
The appointment also adds to Zimbabwe’s representation within international sports administration structures as Nyakuipa seeks to use her experience in accounting, governance, martial arts and Olympic education to promote a more professional and inclusive sporting environment.
