Award Winning NetOne Boss Shares Leadership Philosophy

FOR newly crowned Zimbabwe CEOs Network Overall Platinum Winner Engineer Raphael Mushanawani, leadership is not about titles, awards or personal achievements.

Instead, he believes true success lies in creating opportunities, empowering people and leaving institutions stronger than they were found.

Fresh from being named the Best of the Best CEO in Zimbabwe, the NetOne Group Chief Executive Officer says the most rewarding aspect of his leadership journey has been contributing to a cause bigger than himself.

“There is great fulfilment in knowing that the decisions we make today can create opportunities for future generations,” Mushanawani said.

The telecoms executive, whose leadership has coincided with a period of major transformation at NetOne, said people remain at the centre of every decision he makes.

“I believe leadership is about service, vision and execution. A leader’s responsibility is not simply to manage resources but to inspire people, build strong institutions and create an environment where innovation and excellence can flourish,” he said.

Mushanawani’s philosophy centres on empowering others.

“I have always believed that the greatest leaders are those who empower others to succeed. When people feel valued, trusted and inspired, extraordinary things happen,” he said.

Despite leading one of Zimbabwe’s largest and most strategically important organisations, Mushanawani says his greatest source of motivation comes from witnessing the impact of technology on ordinary citizens.

“When you visit a rural community that has just received connectivity, when you see young entrepreneurs building businesses through digital platforms, or when you witness technology improving access to education and information, you realise that the work we do has a direct impact on people’s lives,” he said.

He was quick to credit his success to teamwork rather than individual effort.

“No leader succeeds alone. Behind every achievement is a dedicated team that shares a common vision and works tirelessly to achieve it,” he said.

Mushanawani described the NetOne workforce as a team of exceptional professionals whose commitment and resilience continue to drive the organisation forward.

Beyond his role at NetOne, he also serves on the board of Zimpapers, a position he says has given him deeper insight into the growing convergence between media, technology and telecommunications.

“The future is being shaped by the convergence of telecommunications, media and technology,” he said.

As one of Zimbabwe’s most celebrated corporate leaders, Mushanawani has a message for young professionals aspiring to leadership positions.

“Dream boldly, work diligently and remain committed to excellence. Do not be discouraged by challenges. Every obstacle presents an opportunity to learn, grow and become stronger,” he advised.

Asked about the legacy he hopes to leave behind, Mushanawani said he wants to be remembered as a leader who transformed institutions into engines of national development.

“I would like to be remembered as a leader who helped transform institutions into engines of national development. A leader who understood that technology is not simply about systems and networks, but about people and possibilities,” he said.

For Mushanawani, the ultimate measure of success is straightforward.

“Success is measured by impact. It is about the institutions we strengthen, the opportunities we create, the people we empower and the legacy we leave behind.”
