TAPIWA Jele produced a commanding performance to win the open section of the sixth edition of the JR Mawere International Chess Tournament, while Christine Makwena emerged victorious in the ladies section after eight demanding rounds in Kwekwe.
Jele finished on an impressive 7.5 points from eight games, finishing a full point clear of his closest challengers in a tournament that attracted players from Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi.
The Zimbabwean’s consistency proved decisive as he negotiated the Swiss system with only half a point dropped throughout the competition.
Shepherd Kukudzarema claimed second place on 6.5 points, while Candidate Master Dion Moyo also finished on 6.5 points to take third place. The tie was separated by the tournament’s tiebreak system, with Kukudzarema taking second ahead of Moyo.
Malawi’s top performer, FIDE Master Joseph Mwale, finished fourth on six points, while Zambia’s Maximillian Tuombe was fifth on the same score.
Zimbabwean players dominated the upper reaches of the standings, with Candidate Master Kudakwashe Sibanda, Simbarashe Chikoya and Zaranykika Lazarus also collecting six points.
FIDE Master Geoffrey Luanja of Zambia and Zimbabwean FIDE Master Roy Mwadzura completed the top 10, both finishing on six points. Vitalis Mapuranga was the best of the players on 5.5 points, taking 11th place.
Jele’s triumph was particularly significant given the strength of the field, which included higher-rated players such as Mwale, Luanja and Mwadzura.
The open section had an average rating of 1753 and featured eight rounds of standard Swiss-system chess, with games played under a 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move time control.
In the ladies section, Makwena secured the title after accumulating six points from eight rounds.
She edged fellow Zimbabwean Nomalungelo Mathe, who also finished on six points, with the tiebreak system deciding the champion. Mathe took second place, while seasoned campaigner Linda Dalitso Shaba completed the podium on 5.5 points.
Rosa Muza and Colletta Wakuruwarewa also registered 5.5 points to finish fourth and fifth respectively.
Tatenda Ndou and Carol Ndlovu completed the leading group, scoring five points each.
Makwena’s victory adds another notable achievement to a tournament that continues to provide a competitive platform for Zimbabwean players while attracting strong participation from the region.
The ladies section had an average rating of 1564 and an average player age of 24, highlighting the blend of experienced campaigners and younger players competing for honours.
The tournament, organised by JR Mawere International, ran from August 8 to 11 in Kwekwe and was played over eight rounds under the Swiss-system format.
Blessing Jemani served as chief arbiter, assisted by deputy chief arbiter Moses Shumba, with the event registered for both national and international rating calculations.
