Mbakumba Dance Steals the Show at Harare Chibuku NeShamwari Festival

THE vibrant sounds of drums and traditional songs filled Werras Park in Glen View 1 as dance groups battled for honours at the Harare provincial finals of the Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Festival.
It was Shingayi Dance Group’s performance of the Mbakumba dance that captured the attention of judges and spectators, earning the group first prize and a cheque of US$2,500.
The victory also secured Shingayi Dance Group a place at the national finals, where provincial champions from across Zimbabwe will compete for the ultimate title.
Pasichigare Dance Group took second place with an entertaining display of the Muchongoyo dance. The group received US$1,500 in prize money for its efforts.
Third place went to Karingezuva Dance Group, whose performance of the Chinyambera dance earned the group US$1,000.
The event drew hundreds of cultural enthusiasts who were treated to colourful costumes, energetic dance routines and traditional rhythms that celebrated Zimbabwe’s rich cultural heritage.
The Harare competition formed part of the nationwide Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Festival, which continues to provide a platform for communities to preserve and showcase their traditional dances.
With the provincial title secured, Shingayi Dance Group will now shift its focus to the national finals on July 11, where the winners will walk away with the top prize of US$15,000.
The festival is organised by Delta Beverages in partnership with the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe National Traditional Dancers Association, and remains one of the country’s biggest celebrations of culture and tradition.
