Police tighten grip on explosives as five arrested in nationwide swoops

THE Zimbabwe Republic Police has intensified its crackdown on the illegal handling of explosives, confirming the arrest of five suspects in separate incidents linked to mining areas and growth points across the country.

The operations, carried out between 8 and 9 May 2026, led to the recovery of explosive materials allegedly being held unlawfully.

In Kezi, Matabeleland South, three men Reason Sibanda (49), Zibusiso Sibanda (28) and Prosper Chaora (41) were arrested at Stella City F12 Mine on 8 May after police reportedly recovered explogels and a safety cord from them.

Authorities said the mine setting raised concern over the possible diversion of regulated blasting materials into unauthorised hands.

On the same day, police in Murewa arrested Fungai Kanyasa (44) at Guyu Business Centre in Maramba after he was allegedly found with emulates and igniting fuses, items commonly used in initiating explosive charges.

In a separate incident, Munyaradzi Mbizi (36) was arrested in Kwekwe on 9 May for unlawful possession of detonator fuses.

Police said the arrests reflect heightened monitoring of explosive materials, particularly in mining environments where strict licensing and storage regulations apply.

Investigations are continuing, with authorities warning that strong action will be taken against illegal possession and handling of explosives.
