Region 5 championships offer Zimbabwe’s young table tennis stars a rare chance to shine

ZIMBABWE’s young table tennis players will have a golden opportunity to announce themselves on the regional stage when the country hosts the Region 5 Table Tennis Championships in Mashonaland East from 10 to 12 July.

The Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union (ZTTU) says the tournament will not only test the country’s competitiveness but also play a key role in developing the next generation of players.

With regional heavyweights South Africa, Angola and Zambia expected to headline the competition, local players are preparing for one of their toughest assignments yet.

ZTTU believes the championships will expose emerging athletes to the demands of international competition while helping improve the overall standards of the sport in Zimbabwe.

The technical team has intensified preparations through specialised programmes focusing on fitness, tactical awareness, mental preparation and sports science.

Officials say hosting the competition on home soil could work in Zimbabwe’s favour as players benefit from familiar surroundings and strong local support.

Beyond the medal chase, the tournament is expected to leave a lasting impact on the country’s table tennis structures.

ZTTU says the event will help strengthen technical capacity by giving coaches, umpires, administrators and volunteers practical experience in managing international tournaments.

The union also hopes the championships will inspire more young people to take up the sport.

Zimbabwe has continued to run school leagues, provincial competitions and national championships as part of its grassroots development strategy.

However, officials say local athletes still require more international exposure, better infrastructure and stronger commercial backing to consistently compete with the region’s top nations.

Lessons from previous regional competitions have convinced the association that structured preparation and sports science are becoming increasingly important in modern table tennis.

Zimbabwe’s goals for the tournament include hosting a successful event, improving regional competitiveness and creating stronger long-term pathways for athlete development.
