Zim’s table tennis stars begin Commonwealth quest in India

FRESH from an encouraging showing at the Southern Africa Regional Championships, Zimbabwe’s national table tennis team has arrived in New Delhi determined to translate its recent progress into strong performances at the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships.
The championships come just days after Zimbabwe successfully hosted the Southern Africa Regional Championships, where the national team produced encouraging performances under coach Wang Liping.
The technical team has retained the same core squad, giving the players another chance to build on the confidence and experience gained on home soil.
The men’s team comprises Vikram Singh, Brian Chamboko, Tatenda Mumvuma, Tinotenda Fambira and Tapiwa Musarurwa, while Naama Boterere and Vongai Zhwakim will compete in the women’s competition.
International umpire Robinson Chigede also travelled with the delegation and will officiate at the championships.
The team held its first training sessions soon after arriving in New Delhi as the players began adapting to local conditions ahead of the tournament.
The Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union said the championships form part of its broader strategy to expose players to higher levels of competition and accelerate the country’s development programme.
“The Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships provide our athletes with a unique opportunity to compete against some of the best players in the Commonwealth. This level of international competition is critical for player development, world ranking opportunities and exposing our athletes to different styles of play,” the union said.
“We are confident that the work done during our preparations has positioned the team well to represent Zimbabwe with pride.”
Zimbabwe heads into the championships seeking to build on recent improvements after investing in high performance coaching and increased international competition.
The union said regular participation at major international events remains key to producing players capable of competing consistently on the continental and global stage, while thanking its sponsors, partners and stakeholders for supporting the team’s campaign in India.
