INDIA completed a ruthless 3-0 T20I series sweep over Zimbabwe after securing a commanding 35 run victory in the third and final match at Harare Sports Club on Sunday, with teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi once again underlining why he is regarded as one of world cricket’s brightest young talents.
The visitors combined fearless batting with relentless pace bowling to overpower Zimbabwe, posting an imposing 192 for five before restricting the hosts to 157 for seven despite another spirited fightback led by Ryan Burl.
While the scoreline confirmed India’s complete dominance throughout the series, Zimbabwe were once again left reflecting on a familiar story. Their bowlers produced moments of quality and their middle order showed resilience, but costly top order collapses and an inability to seize key moments ensured the gulf between the two sides remained significant.
Sooryavanshi was once again the architect of India’s success. The left hander followed his explosive performances earlier in the series with a magnificent 81 from just 49 deliveries, striking eight fours and four sixes in an innings that blended clean ball striking with remarkable maturity.
Even after Abhishek Sharma fell cheaply for two, caught behind off Blessing Muzarabani for the third successive match, Sooryavanshi never allowed Zimbabwe’s attack to settle. He dominated the Powerplay before sharing an 75 run second wicket partnership with Ishan Kishan, who contributed a fluent 29 off 26 balls.
Sooryavanshi reached his half century from only 31 balls before accelerating further, punishing anything overpitched or short as India’s scoring rate climbed steadily.
His outstanding innings finally ended in the 15th over when Wessly Madhevere tempted him with a wide delivery and Brad Evans produced one of the catches of the series, sprinting in from long off before diving full length to complete a spectacular low catch.
By then India had already built the perfect platform.
Captain Shreyas Iyer maintained the momentum with 27 from 18 deliveries before Rinku Singh’s unbeaten aggression at the death lifted India to a formidable 192 for five.
Zimbabwe’s bowlers enjoyed isolated successes but struggled to contain India’s relentless scoring. Blessing Muzarabani dismissed Abhishek Sharma and finished with one for 33, while Sikandar Raza removed Kishan. Brad Evans claimed two wickets, including those of Iyer and Rinku Singh, while Madhevere picked up the prized scalp of Sooryavanshi.
However, India’s total always looked above par on a surface offering enough pace for stroke making.
Zimbabwe’s chase suffered a disastrous start that effectively decided the contest.
For the second time in the series, Brian Bennett was dismissed by Mayank Yadav with the very first delivery of the innings. The fast bowler generated late movement at 147 kilometres per hour and found Bennett’s outside edge, with Sooryavanshi safely taking the catch at first slip.
The early breakthrough immediately placed Zimbabwe under pressure, and things quickly worsened.
Dion Myers made 19 before miscuing a slower ball from Yash Thakur, while captain Sikandar Raza departed without scoring after offering a leading edge back to the same bowler only one delivery later.
At 34 for three inside four overs, Zimbabwe’s hopes were already fading.
Ben Curran attempted to rebuild but his innings of 20 ended when Ravi Bishnoi induced an ill judged reverse sweep that looped gently to short third.
With four wickets down for only 65, Zimbabwe again relied heavily on Ryan Burl to rescue the innings.
The experienced all rounder produced another composed performance, remaining unbeaten on 54 from 43 deliveries with five boundaries while sharing a valuable partnership with Wessly Madhevere, who struck 28 from 25 balls.
The pair briefly threatened to make the contest interesting by adding 60 runs, but India’s bowlers consistently struck whenever Zimbabwe appeared to regain momentum.
Madhevere fell to Mayank Yadav after finding Tilak Varma in the deep before debutant Ashok Sharma celebrated his maiden international wicket when he bowled Tadiwanashe Marumani with a delivery that jagged back sharply to hit off stump.
Brad Evans added a brisk 14, but India’s disciplined attack never allowed Zimbabwe to mount a serious challenge.
Mayank Yadav was once again outstanding, finishing with three for 29 after dismissing Bennett, Madhevere and Evans to complete another match winning spell. Yash Thakur claimed two wickets, while Bishnoi and Ashok Sharma each collected one.
Although Zimbabwe finished on 157 for seven, the target had always remained beyond reach after their early collapse.
The series ultimately highlighted both India’s remarkable depth and Zimbabwe’s continuing transition. The visitors introduced fresh faces throughout the tour without sacrificing quality, while Zimbabwe showed encouraging signs through players such as Burl, Madhevere and Muzarabani but were repeatedly punished for fragile starts with the bat.
For India, the clean sweep reinforces the strength of their next generation, with Sooryavanshi emerging as the undisputed star of the series after another breathtaking display that earned him both the Player of the Match and Player of the Series awards.
For Zimbabwe, the defeat closes a difficult campaign, but the lessons are clear. Competing consistently against the world’s leading T20 nations will require stronger starts, greater batting intent and improved execution during decisive moments.
