Harare Mayor’s Challenge Cup grows in stature as taekwondo stars battle for honours

HARARE Mayor’s Challenge Cup Taekwondo Championships continued to gain momentum with a successful second edition at the City Sports Centre over the weekend.

The championship, held on 16 August, brought together taekwondo athletes from across Zimbabwe, providing a competitive platform for fighters to test their skills while preparing for upcoming international assignments.

Held under the patronage of Harare Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume, the tournament has quickly established itself as an important fixture on the local martial arts calendar.

The second edition attracted regional interest, with competitors from neighbouring countries joining Zimbabwean athletes, giving the local fighters an opportunity to compete against opponents from different backgrounds and fighting styles.

Speaking at the opening ceremony on behalf of the Mayor Councillor Kudzai Kadzombe said sport  is not measured by medals, but by the lives changed through perseverance, self-control and teamwork.

“May new friendships be forged and may the lessons learnt today in victory and defeat guide our young people through a lifetime of discipline and excellence,” Cllr Kadzombe said.

“The cumulative effect of these changes is stronger families, safer neighbourhoods and a more prosperous Harare.

Zimbabwe Taekwondo Association president Benson Zwizwai said the tournament was an important component of the country’s preparations for the Region 5 Games scheduled for Mozambique in December.

Zimbabwe is targeting an improvement on its previous regional performances after collecting bronze medals, with the association now seeking to progress towards silver and gold.

“We wanted to grow from bronze to gold via silver,” Zwizwai said.

The Mayor’s Challenge Cup also provided coaches with an opportunity to assess athletes ahead of future national assignments, while competitors gained valuable experience in a high-level competitive environment.

Apart from the prestige of winning the various categories, the top performers were rewarded with medals and shields, while tournament gees added another incentive for competitors.

The prizes gave the championship a festive atmosphere while recognising athletes who emerged at the top of their respective categories.

The event was also attended by officials and technical personnel from the taekwondo fraternity, further strengthening its profile and reinforcing Zimbabwe’s links with regional martial arts structures.

Harare City Martial Arts Club chairman Martin Chimombe said the successful hosting of the competition demonstrated the commitment of the organisers and their partners to developing taekwondo in the capital.

The tournament also provided an opportunity to promote the sport among young people and encourage the development of athletes who can eventually represent Zimbabwe at major international competitions.

Its timing within the national team’s preparations for the Region 5 Games has given it added significance, with athletes using the championship to gauge their readiness for tougher regional competition.
