ZIMBABWE will send a 10 player team to the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, with the country’s Open and Women teams set to compete against the world’s leading chess nations from September 15 to 27.
The official FIDE Olympiad entries show Zimbabwe ranked 116th out of 208 countries in the Open section and out of 192 countries in the Women’s section, as the teams prepare for one of the biggest events on the international chess calendar.
The Zimbabwe Open team, with an average rating of 2126, will be captained by Kudakwashe Sibanda and features a strong line-up led by National Champion, FIDE Master Roy Mwadzura, who is the highest rated player in the squad at 2206.
Mwadzura will be joined by Tapiwa Jele (2132), Emarald Takudzwa Mushore (2100), Vitalis Mapuranga (2064) and Terrence Mureya (2054).
The squad combines experience from Zimbabwe’s top domestic competitions with players who have represented the country at international level. Mwadzura, Jele and Mushore have been among the leading performers on the local chess circuit, while Mapuranga and Mureya add further depth to the team.
Zimbabwe’s Women team will be led by captain Tafadzwa Shanya-Million and carries an average rating of 1805 ahead of the global competition.
Women’s Candidate Master Kudzanayi Charinda, rated 1895, will spearhead the challenge, supported by Ladies National Champion Christine Makwena (1867), Nomalungelo Mathe (1756), Carol Ndlovu (1700) and Tehillah Makwiranzou (1675).
Seasoned campaigner Linda Shaba is a notable absentee from the team.
The Olympiad will bring together thousands of players representing nations from across the globe in the Open and Women sections, with teams competing under the Swiss system over 11 rounds.
For Zimbabwe, the tournament represents another opportunity to measure progress against elite chess nations while gaining valuable international exposure.
The Open team will be hoping to improve its standing through consistency across all boards, with Mwadzura, Jele, Mushore, Mapuranga and Mureya expected to play key roles against highly rated opponents.
In the Women section, Zimbabwe will look to Charinda’s experience and the growing strength of its female players as the team seeks to make a positive impact on the world stage.
The Samarkand Olympiad will also provide an important platform for Zimbabwe’s chess players to gain international rating points and experience while continuing to raise the country’s profile in global chess.
